On 1 March, Minister-president Bourgeois had a meeting with Mark Drakeford, Welsh Cabinet Secretary for Finance and ministerial lead for ongoing EU issues and Brexit. Wales and Flanders are both striving for smooth trade relations post-Brexit in order to minimize the damage to citizens and firms.
Wales and Flanders, both maritime regions, agree on the need for extensive cooperation to limit administrative overload for ports and companies as much as possible. Agreements about product standards are a necessary precondition for an elaborate trade agreement. Both ministers expressed their wish to maintain close ties in other areas too.
After all, Flanders and the UK will always be neighbors. Both ministers are looking forward to the vision of British PM Theresa May on future EU-UK relations.
