Ministers of the Flemish Government and delegations of the Flemish Parliament regularly visit Scotland, to discuss topics such as education, wellbeing, ports, or international cooperation.
Flemish artists also visit regularly, often with the support of the Flemish government. They perform in several Scottish concert halls and on many Scottish festivals. Many of these performances are also brought to a wide audience at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where there is a ‘Big in Belgium’ section.
The relationship between Scottish and Flemish universities is excellent. The Diplomatic Representation supported the research project ‘Scotland and the Flemish People’ at the University of St Andrews. The result is an extremely interesting book discussing the influence Flemish immigrants have had on Scottish society throughout the centuries.
In June 2023 Minister-President of Flanders Jan Jambon and First Minister of Scotland Humza Yousaf signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Flemish and Scottish governments, encompassing both the current ties and future opportunities for cooperation between the two governments.
